Before they get their happy ever after, we have to wade through the dumpster fire that is Season 4. Luke and Lorelai finally kiss in the finale (“Raincoats and Recipes”), and we all squealed. But then Season 5 hits, and it’s like they both forgot how to talk.
Lorelai is busy dealing with her parents’ divorce and the whole “Luke is hiding his daughter” drama. Meanwhile, Luke is busy being a giant emotional brick wall. They fumble around until a massive fight at the end of “Blame Booze and Melville” (Ep. 12) sends Lorelai into the arms of… wait for it… Christopher. Yes, that guy.
The Big Breakthrough
Now, here’s where it gets juicy. In “Wedding Bell Blues” (S5, Ep. 13), Lorelai is at Emily and Richard’s vow renewal. She’s dressed in a gorgeous blue dress, and she’s stuck playing hostess while Christopher’s dad-joke energy hangs in the air. Luke shows up looking like a moody lumberjack, and the tension is so thick you could cut it with a Rory-class book spine.
Then it happens. Lorelai, after a little liquid courage, tells Luke she loves him. And he, the absolute king of mixed signals, storms off. But thanks to a little push from Emily—yes, that Emily—Luke swoops back in. He literally pulls her away from Christopher during the “renewal vows” scene. It’s dramatic. It’s romantic. It’s so Luke.
