Ever notice how toy shops are almost always shut on Bank Holiday Mondays? It’s baffling. Kids have a day off, yet the place where they’d spend their pocket money is closed. I’m convinced it’s a plot to encourage outdoor play. Or maybe the staff just really, really love their lie-ins.
Compare that to your local hardware store. Those places are open. Why? Because Bank Holidays are when DIY disasters strike. You need a new drill bit at 11 AM. And they know it. They’re the unsung heroes of the bank holiday emergency.
The Quirky Exception: The High Street Pub
Here’s a fun fact: Pubs have their own time zone. Many open for lunch (12 PM) and then close by 4 PM on a bank holiday. Why? So the staff can also enjoy the day off. It’s a very British compromise. You get your Sunday roast, but don’t you dare linger for a second pint.
Then there’s the corner shop. The magnificent, chaotic corner shop. It never reads the rules. It opens at 7 AM and closes at 11 PM, rain or shine, holiday or not. It runs on pure caffeine and a secret schedule known only to its owner. God bless them.
