Remember that time your school announced a snow day, but then your brother found out your dad still had to go to work? That’s the vibe when people whisper “cancellation.” It’s a maybe-not that feels too real. You start mentally packing your bags for the tournament, only to remember you have to actually, you know, travel there.
The real fear isn’t the cancellation itself. It’s the awkwardness of having to explain to your non-soccer friends why you’re suddenly free on weekends. “Oh, the World Cup? Yeah, it’s off. I guess I’ll just… take up knitting now?” That conversation is a special kind of cringe.
And let’s not forget the poor office sweepstakes guy. He’s got a spreadsheet with 32 teams, $20 buy-ins, and a dream. A cancellation would turn that man into a ghost, haunting the breakroom with his unprinted brackets. We can’t do that to him.
The Great “What About My Snacks?” Debate
I think the real casualty of a cancelled World Cup isn’t the sport—it’s the snacks. We’re talking about years of menu planning. You’ve already practiced making those Brazilian cheese rolls and German currywurst. You’ve perfected your “I don’t know, honey, it’s just a little chili and lime” excuse for the fourth helping of guacamole.

And what about the new traditions? I swear, my friend Dave only bought a huge screen TV because he “needed to host the group stage matches.” If the Cup is cancelled, Dave will have to use that TV for actual family conversations. Poor Dave. He’ll probably end up watching a nature documentary about penguins, crying into his dip.
It’s like that time you bought a fancy new grill for a Super Bowl party, only for the power to go out. The grill sits there, mocking you. The World Cup cancellation is the emotional version of that—all potential, zero payoff.
