Most of the time, those midweek booms are about Diwali. That’s the Hindu festival of lights, and it’s huge in London. Neighbors might be lighting lamps, but the fireworks are the big, joyful announcement: “Good triumphs over evil!” Or it could be Chinese New Year, when the whole of Chinatown and Trafalgar Square turns into a dragon-filled, confetti-tossing wonderland. Either way, you’re hearing a party that’s older than your building.
A wedding, a win, or a “just because”
Sometimes it’s simpler. A couple just got married at the Shard and decided their union needed a sky-high exclamation point. Or Arsenal scored last-minute and a fan in your street launched his personal stash. I once saw a man set off a firework from his balcony because his cat finally came home after three days. No, really. Londoners will find a reason. Even the Queen’s birthday in June (yes, there are two of them—the real one and the official one) gets a boom-fest, because why not?
Don’t forget the big public events. The New Year’s Eve display is the obvious one, but you’ll also get pops during Bonfire Night (November 5th), when the city remembers a guy named Guy Fawkes who tried to blow up Parliament. We celebrate that by blowing up the sky. It’s very British. You might also hear them during Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan, when families gather for huge feasts and fireworks in parks like Victoria Park or Finsbury.
