Amended returns (Form 1040-X) have their own special hell. You cannot e-file them with a payment—you must mail everything. And the address is different from your original return. Because of course it is.
Double-check the instructions on the form. They’ll tell you to send it to the “service center” based on your location. I once mailed mine to the wrong one and got a letter six months later saying “Oops, we misplaced this.” Fun times.
Moral of the story: when in doubt, call the IRS. Yes, you’ll be on hold for an hour. But it beats the alternative of your payment ending up in a pile of forgotten dreams.
