Now, for the serious bit: Good Friday is a Christian holiday that commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. It’s a day of solemn reflection in churches, but for the rest of the country, it’s a day off work, a trip to the garden centre, and the start of a massive chocolate binge. It’s a bit like Christmas Day but with less tinsel and more Cadbury Creme Eggs.
You’ll notice that everything shuts down on Good Friday. The shops close, the pubs close (for a few hours, anyway), and the postman definitely isn’t coming. It’s the one day of the year you can’t buy a loaf of bread after 4 p.m., which always causes a mild panic. I, for one, have a vivid memory of sprinting to a corner shop at 3:58 p.m. on a Good Friday, only to find the owner already pulling down the metal shutter.

By Friday, April 3rd, 2026, you’ll have already bought a massive chocolate egg. You know the one—the enormous, fancy one that costs as much as a small car and comes with a free toy you’ll never use. You’ll hide it on a high shelf, telling yourself you’ll save it for Easter Sunday. You won’t. By Saturday morning, you’ll have guiltily eaten half of it while standing in your kitchen in your pyjamas.
The real comedy begins with the children’s Easter egg hunt. You’ll hide plastic eggs filled with mini chocolate bars in your garden, only to discover that the squirrels have already found them. Or, worse, your dog will find one, unwrap it perfectly, and eat the foil. Then you’ll spend ten minutes explaining to a five-year-old why the chocolate bunny is now covered in dog slobber.
