History’s first “official” fight is a weird one. It wasn’t about borders, but about religion and dinner. In 988 AD, Prince Vladimir of Kyiv picked Christianity for his empire. He chose the Eastern (Byzantine) version over the Roman one.
This was basically picking a team in a cosmic sports rivalry. It set the stage for a thousand years of "who’s the real boss?" arguments. Fun fact: Vladimir also banned alcohol for his people. Spoiler: that rule didn’t stick.
The Mongol Party Crasher
Then the Mongols showed up in the 1200s. They smashed everything. For centuries, the land we now call Ukraine was split. The north (Moscow) got ruled by the Mongols. The south (Kyiv) got absorbed by Poland and Lithuania.
This is the key plot twist. While Russia was learning to be a tough, isolated forest kingdom, Ukraine was partying with European nobles. They spoke different dialects. They developed different vibes. Two siblings raised in different houses.
