There’s something universal about an 9 PM showtime. It’s not too late that you’re yawning, and not too early that you’re still digesting dinner. It’s the Goldilocks zone of live music. Olly himself probably glances at his watch backstage, does a little shimmy, and thinks, “Right, time to make people smile.”

My mate Dave once insisted we show up at 6 PM for a 7:30 PM doors. We sat there for two hours watching the crew adjust a microphone stand. Dave kept saying, “Any minute now,” like he was waiting for a bus that never comes. Don’t be Dave. Trust the 9 PM window, but give yourself a fifteen-minute grace period for delays.
The Curfew Curse
Venues have strict curfews, usually around 11 PM. This means Olly’s set will last about 90 minutes to two hours. If he starts at 9 PM, he’ll wrap up by 10:30 or 11 PM. That’s plenty of time to sing along to “Troublemaker” and still catch the last train. It’s like a well-oiled machine, but sometimes the machine hiccups.
One time, I saw a gig where the main act came on at 9:45 because the support act decided to tell a fifteen-minute story about his cat. The crowd was restless, but the headliner still managed to pack in all the hits. Olly’s professional like that—he won’t keep you waiting unless a guitar string snaps.
