Let’s be honest. You’ve probably babied your chickens through a “cold snap” of 30°F while wearing a parka and wool socks. I’ve done it too.
But really, wild jungle fowl—their ancestors—survived way worse. Domestic chickens are hardier than we give them credit for.
The biggest killer? Our own over-protective kindness. Too much heat, too much humidity, too little air flow. Don’t kill them with love.
So, What’s the Answer?
For cold: dry, draft-free, and insulated space. Down to about -10°F without issues if they’re hardy breeds.
For heat: shade, water, air flow. Anything above 95°F needs active cooling. Heat kills faster than cold, period.
And for everything in between? Relax. Grab a coffee. Watch them dust bathe. They’ve got this. So do you.
Now go check on your flock. And maybe toss them a frozen blueberry. They’ll act like it’s the greatest moment in chicken history.
