Imagine a fish that gave up on having a tail. Seriously. Its body just sort of… ends. It has these two giant triangular fins that it flops around like a drunk penguin. And its face? It has a tiny beak-like mouth and eyes that scream, “I have no idea what I’m doing.”
It’s the heaviest bony fish in the world. Yeah, heaviest. An adult can weigh over 5,000 pounds. That’s like driving a small car through the ocean, but a car that’s shaped like a dinner plate. How does that even work?
The “Basking” Confusion
You’ll often see mola molas lying on their sides at the surface. It looks like they’re dead or sunbathing. That’s why they’re called sunfish! They’re actually warming up after deep dives.
These goofballs dive hundreds of feet down to hunt jellyfish. The water is freezing down there. So they bob up to the surface, flop over, and let the sun and seabirds warm them up. Birds also help by picking off parasites. It’s a spa day, mola mola style.
