Delia’s relationship with Sweeney was a slow-motion horror show. He was obsessively jealous, controlling, and violent. She tried to leave. He wouldn’t let her.
One night, he attacked her with an axe. Yes, an axe. He tied her up, tortured her, and left her for dead. But Delia didn’t die. She crawled to a neighbor’s door, covered in blood.
That’s the kind of willpower that makes you say, “Wow, I am not that tough.”
The trial that broke records
When Sweeney finally went to court, Delia testified. She faced him in the witness box, looking him in the eye. The judge called her evidence “the most harrowing” he’d ever heard.
Sweeney was convicted of murder and attempted murder. He got two life sentences. But Delia’s story didn’t end there. She spent years in hiding, terrified he’d send someone to kill her from prison.
Can you imagine? You survive an axe attack, then you’re scared of a guy behind bars. Ridiculous and devastating.
