Remember that one classmate who never studied but aced every test? Tom Riddle is that person, except he’s also secretly figuring out how to live forever. Harry spends this book obsessing over Tom’s past like we all sometimes stalk an old friend’s Instagram feed—only instead of vacation photos, Harry finds dark magic and diary entries.
What makes it relatable is that Tom wasn’t born a monster. He was a lonely kid who just wanted to be special. Ever felt left out? Yeah, Tom felt that too—he just handled it by becoming a supervillain instead of joining a book club.
The Memory Puddle and Your Old Yearbook
Dumbledore takes Harry on a tour of Tom’s memories, like flipping through a dusty yearbook. There’s young Tom in a woolly jumper, smiling politely, while you just know he’s planning something sinister. It’s like looking at your high school valedictorian’s baby photos—cute face, but you remember they cut you in line at the cafeteria.
This is why the book matters: it shows that even the worst people start out as kids who just wanted a pat on the back. Tom wanted love and recognition, but he chose the dark side because it was easier than being vulnerable. Haven’t we all taken a shortcut that backfired? Well, Tom’s shortcut involved soul-splitting, but the principle is the same.
