Don’t over-research. Just pick a departure from London Victoria or Marylebone on a Saturday morning. Get a “first class” ticket if you can—it’s usually a reserved seat and a cup of tea that comes in an actual cup, not a cardboard coffin. Wear layers. The carriage might be toasty from the steam heat, but the platform will freeze your bits off. And for heaven’s sake, take a real camera. Your phone photos of the engine will look like a blurry ghost. The steam train deserves better.
I did the Spa Valley Railway last year. It’s a short hop from Tunbridge Wells, and the highlight wasn’t the train itself—it was the lady in the gift shop who told me I had “the look of a proper engine enthusiast.” I don’t. I was wearing jeans and a hoodie. But for ten seconds, I felt like part of the club. You’ll feel that, too. The nod of recognition from a stranger on the platform. The faint smile. The shared understanding that, for a few hours, we’ve all escaped the Victoria line and found something better.
So go. Book a ticket. Breathe in the smoke. And if you see a bloke waving at a cow, wave with him. He’s your new best friend.
