Meet the Tube Web Spider (Segestria florentina), a goth nightmare that lives in old walls and cracks. It’s black with a greenish shimmer and fangs that look like tiny pitchforks. It’s rare, but if you find one in Bristol or the South coast, back away slowly.
Its bite is genuinely painful—like a deep, burning bee sting that can last a day. One victim described it as “a hot needle dragged across my thumb.” But here’s the catch: it’s a shy recluse. You literally have to poke it with your finger to get bitten. So don’t do that.
Why do they call it “tube web”? Because it builds a silky tunnel and waits for prey to stumble in. It’s basically a spider version of a street mugger who lives in a duvet.
