The London Central Mosque, completed in 1977, was designed by British architect Sir Frederick Gibberd. Its golden dome is actually aluminium-gilded with gold leaf, and the 140-foot minaret was built to complement the park’s trees. No two windows in the prayer hall are exactly the same—each one filters light differently throughout the day.
Here’s a cultural nod: the mosque’s calligraphy inside is by renowned Pakistani artist Shahid Alam. If you look up during Zuhr prayer, you’ll see verses of light and geometry dancing together.
What to Wear and What to Expect
For Eid prayers, modest clothing is the norm, but you’ll see everything from pristine white thobes to chic urban hijabs. Shoulders and knees should be covered—a light scarf or cardigan works wonders. Non-Muslim visitors are welcome, but remember to remove shoes before entering the carpeted prayer hall.
A quick tip for first-timers: the prayer lasts about 20 minutes, followed by a sermon. Children are usually welcome, but keep them close—the space gets packed. There’s a dedicated sisters’ section on the upper floor with a great view of the dome.
