The swimming pool at Nuffield Reading is not one of those cold, utilitarian pools that smells like a hospital. No, this one is actually warm. It’s like stepping into a giant, chlorinated bath. The lane swimming is for the serious types, but I prefer the gentle splashing zone. I do a sort of improvised backstroke that my kids call “water flailing.” Nobody reports me to the lifeguard. It’s a good system.
Afterwards, the sauna and steam room are waiting. This is the real prize. You sit there like a baked potato, listening to your joints creak with gratitude. I once saw a man in the steam room reading a gardening magazine. That’s the level of chilled-out vibe we’re talking about here.
