Don’t lose it. Replacement placards require a whole new application process. Keep it in your glove compartment when not in use, and never—ever—write your license plate number on it in permanent marker. The DMV frowns upon such creativity.
If you’re transporting someone with a disability, that person must be in the vehicle with you when you park. The placard is person-specific, not car-specific. So don’t lend it to your neighbor just because they’re running late for a dentist appointment. That’s a one-way ticket to a violation.
And for the love of the Jersey Turnpike, renew on time. Permanent placards need renewal every four years, and temporary ones expire like milk. Put a calendar alert labeled “Refresh the Pass” so you don’t end up fumbling for quarters at a meter.
