Next time you scream at your TV after a questionable pass-interference call, remember this: The ref you’re yelling at probably just worked a 14-hour day. He flew in from another state, slept in a budget hotel, and spent his morning meetings reviewing formations. He’s not the enemy—he’s just the guy who gets paid to make your team mad.
So, does $5,500 to $15,000 per game sound fair? I mean, it’s more than I make writing this article. But when you factor in the travel, the injuries, the death threats from fans (yes, that happens), and the fact that these folks have to be perfect every single play? Maybe they’ve earned every penny.
Or maybe you’d still rather they just let your team win. Either way, now you know the number. Now go enjoy the game—and maybe give the ref a tiny break. (But only a tiny one. We still need someone to blame.)
