You don’t need a fancy gadget. But if you do have a pom pom maker, great. If not? Grab a piece of cardboard. Scissors. And your yarn. That’s it.
Warning: Scissors are the most important tool here. Dull scissors make sad, fuzzy pom poms. Use sharp ones. Your future self will thank you.
Method 1: The Cardboard Circle (Old School)
Cut two identical circles from cardboard. About 3-4 inches across. Cut a hole in the middle of each one. Think donut. Tasty donut.
Now, put the circles together. Start wrapping yarn around the donut. Wrap it tight. Wrap it thick. Don’t be shy. The more yarn, the fluffier the pom pom. You want it to look like a poodle on steroids.
When it’s fat and happy, take your sharp scissors. Slide the blade between the two cardboard circles. Cut all the way around the outer edge. This is the scary part. Just go for it. Snip snip snip.

Method 2: The Fork Trick (For Tiny Pom Poms)
Need a tiny pom pom for a kid’s hat? Or for a pair of slippers? Use a dinner fork. It’s genius. Wrap yarn around the prongs. Lots of times. Then tie a knot tightly around the middle. Snip the loops on the sides.
Boom. Micro pom pom. It’s like having a baby cloud. Adorable and slightly ridiculous.
