So, what do you do? First, check your local transit agency’s website or app. They usually post holiday schedules weeks in advance. Don’t just look at the time—look at the effective date. That little note that says “No service on Christmas Day” has ruined more than one hopeful morning. I speak from the shame of showing up at 8 a.m. to a completely empty stop, feeling like the world’s most optimistic fool.
Second, call a friend or a rideshare as a backup. You know your buddy Lisa who always offers a ride? Now’s the time to cash in that favor. She’ll probably invite you in for eggnog anyway.

What About the Drivers?
Let’s take a moment to appreciate the bus drivers who do work on Christmas. If you catch a bus, say a loud, genuine “thank you.” They’re away from their own families so you can get to yours. One driver I met, Frank (yes, the Bing Crosby fan), told me he volunteers for the Christmas shift because his kids are grown. “I get paid double time,” he winked, “and I get to hear everyone’s best Christmas jokes.” He told me a groaner about a reindeer and a bus schedule. It was terrible. I still remember it.
