Think of bread as the duck equivalent of a whole bag of Doritos. Sure, they’ll gobble it down like they’ve won the lottery. But it’s empty calories. No real nutrition, just filler.
Ducks need a balanced diet to stay healthy, especially in cold weather. Bread fills their tiny bellies, so they stop eating stuff that actually helps them, like insects, weeds, and aquatic plants. And that’s how you get malnourished ducks.
Over time, too much bread can lead to a condition called “angel wing.” Sounds pretty, right? It’s not. Their wings get twisted out of shape, and they can’t fly. Suddenly, your “fun snack time” is a one-way ticket to grounded duck town.
Moldy bread is a whole other nightmare
You might think, “Oh, they’ll eat the stale bits anyway!” Please don’t. Moldy bread can cause a serious fungal lung infection in ducks called aspergillosis. It’s as gross as it sounds.
And that bread you toss in the water? It doesn’t just disappear. It rots, gets slimy, and starts stinking. That encourages algae blooms and nasty bacteria. Congratulations, you’ve made a duck swamp.
