This is the fun part. A wiry plumber named “Larry” shows up in a white van that smells like pipe dope and optimism. He’ll dig a small trench near your property line or pop a panel in your basement. It takes about an hour, tops. Do not offer him coffee unless you want him to stay for two hours explaining his opinion on copper vs. PVC.
While he works, you’ll feel like you’re watching a nature documentary. “Here we see the wild water meter installer, carefully attaching the brass coupling to the main line. Observe his graceful use of the pipe wrench.” Then he’ll show you a little box with a spinning dial. That spinning dial is your new best friend and your new worst enemy. It only stops when you do.
