Chances are, it’s hydrogen sulfide gas. Fancy name, right? Basically, it’s sulfur bacteria living the dream in your well or water heater. They eat away at stuff, and that fart-like odor is their calling card.

Sometimes it’s just a mineral reaction. Iron, manganese, and magnesium can all play tricks on your nose. But don’t panic—the fix is usually simpler than you think.

Let’s start with the easiest trick: the water heater test

Fill a glass with cold water from the tap. Now sniff it. If it smells clean, but the hot water reeks, your water heater is the culprit. That’s good news—it’s a local issue, not a whole-house nightmare.

You can flush your water heater. Seriously, just drain a few gallons from the bottom valve. Do this once a year, and you’ll flush out the sulfur bacteria party crashers. If that doesn’t work, try replacing the sacrificial anode rod inside the heater. It’s a $30 fix that shocks the smell right out of the system.

Cold water smells? We’re going deeper.

If the cold water smells like a bog, the problem is in your well itself. But hold up—don’t call a driller yet. First, shock chlorinate your well. It sounds scary, but it’s just dumping a safe amount of household bleach down the well casing.

You’ll run every faucet until you smell bleach. Then shut everything off for 12–24 hours. After that, flush the system until the bleach is gone. It’s like a detox for your water. Warning: your laundry might smell like a pool for one rinse cycle. Totally worth it.
