The very first World Series happened in 1903. Yes, you read that right—that makes it over 120 years old. But hold your peanuts and Cracker Jack. It wasn’t even called the “World Series” at first. The press called it the “World’s Championship Series.” Fancy, right?

That 1903 battle was between the Boston Americans and the Pittsburgh Pirates. Boston won, and nobody threw a parade. Why? Because the whole thing was a messy exhibition. Some players refused to participate. Others argued over money. It was like planning a wedding where half the guests don’t show up.

The Year It Almost Died

Here’s where it gets juicy. There was no World Series in 1904. The New York Giants’ owner, John T. Brush, called the winning team a “barnstorming sideshow.” He hated the idea. So the Giants just refused to play. The series fell apart like a cheap baseball glove.

But fans went ballistic. Newspapers roasted the Giants. The public demanded the games return. So in 1905, Brush actually wrote the rules for the modern Series. Irony, anyone? That’s why some historians say the Series is only 119 years old. The 1903 game was a one-off fling.
