Your kitchen is a water vampire. Washing dishes by hand? That uses up to 27 gallons. A dishwasher, on the other hand, uses about 6 to 10 gallons—if you run it full. So stop pre-rinsing every plate like you’re prepping for surgery. The machine can handle a little spaghetti sauce. It’s not that delicate.
Also, you’re leaving the tap running while you brush your teeth, aren’t you? Admit it. That’s 2 gallons a minute. For two minutes of brushing, you’ve wasted enough water to baptize a small dog. Turn the faucet off. Your mouth will still be minty fresh, I promise.

The Lawn: The Green Monster
Now for the biggest water hog: your lawn. An average sprinkler system guzzles 1,000 gallons per week in summer. That’s enough to drown a herd of elephants. And for what? So your grass can look slightly greener than your neighbor’s? Spoiler: it’s not worth it. Lawns are basically expensive, thirsty carpets.
If you want to be a water hero, let your lawn go golden in August. It’s called “drought chic.” Or better yet, plant cacti. Cacti don’t complain, and they look great in a party hat.
