Americans can also get a passport card for only $65. It’s like a passport, but it only works for land and sea travel to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda. Basically, it’s the “I forgot my regular passport” card. It doesn’t even get you on a plane. Use it at an airport, and they’ll laugh you out of security.

Most people skip this, but if you’re a cruise ship day-drinker, it’s a steal. Just don’t wave it at a TSA agent and expect to board a flight to London. They will confiscate it and probably your dignity.
Renewals: The Slightly Cheaper Trap
Good news: renewing an adult passport is only $130. That’s a $35 discount for not being a fresh-faced newbie. The bad news? You can only renew by mail if your old passport is in decent shape. If it looks like you used it as a coaster for a margarita, you’ll need to apply in person again. And yes, they judge you.
Also, if your passport expired more than 15 years ago, you’re not “renewing”—you’re starting from scratch. The government considers you a brand-new citizen with no travel history. It’s like a “reset button” for your identity, but $165 more expensive.
