People think it’s longer than War and Peace. Nope. That monster has 580,000 words. The Odyssey has about 97,000. It’s not even close. It’s like comparing a marathon to a half-marathon—both are impressive, but one lets you stop for beer sooner.
Another myth: you need to be a scholar to enjoy it. False. I read it hungover on a Sunday, wearing pajamas at 2 PM, and it was fine. Actually, it was better than fine—it was cathartic. Nothing makes your own messy life feel manageable like a guy who loses all his crew because they ate a sacred cow.
The “I tried and quit” trap
If you’ve started The Odyssey and put it down, you’re not alone. I did that twice. The first time, I got bogged down in the genealogy. Who cares if someone’s great-grandfather was a sea nymph? Just skip it. Seriously, Homer won’t mind. He’s dead. And if anyone judges you, say the translation was unclear. Works every time.

The second time, I started from Book 5—right when Odysseus finally leaves Calypso’s island. That’s where the action really kicks off. Think of Books 1-4 as the trailer. You don’t have to watch the trailer. Just jump into the movie.
