Let’s rewind to 2019. A Greggs in Reading town centre caught fire. The culprit? A faulty oven. Obviously.
Imagine the scene. Sausage rolls in peril. Steak bakes nearly sacrificed to the fire gods. The entire town held its breath.
Firefighters arrived. The Greggs was saved. But the legend was born. Never trust a pasty at 3pm on a Wednesday.
The Great Reading Fire of… Wait, What Year?
Actually, Reading has a proper, massive historical fire. In 1867, a huge blaze destroyed most of the town centre. We’re talking before frozen pizza was invented.
The fire started at a brewery. A brewery! Alcohol-fueled flames. The irony is so rich, you could bottle it and sell it at the farmers’ market.
After that, Reading banned thatched roofs. A sensible decision, but it also killed the dream of a medieval-themed coffee shop.
