It happens in the very first episode of Season 3. Sean is fatally stabbed during a prison riot—a messy, brutal end that feels almost too quick for a character who spent two seasons burning bridges. The scene is raw and unflinching, a hallmark of the show’s gritty realism. You don’t get a noble death; you get a shiv in the dark.
Why the rush? Showrunner Jonathan Tropper told Collider they wanted to “shake the table” and remind everyone that no one is safe. It’s a bold move, and honestly? It works. Killing off the lead mobster in the first act of the season sets a savage tone for everything that follows.
What This Means for the Rest of Season 3
Without Sean, the power vacuum is seismic. His younger brother Tommy—played by the equally intense Jason Tobin—is forced to step up, and let’s just say he’s not exactly a people person. The Chinatown factions, led by the cunning Ah Sahm (Andrew Koji), smell blood in the water. The result is one of the most unpredictable seasons of TV you’ll watch this year.
Here’s a fun fact: Joe Cole actually filmed his death scene in a single day, in a cold London warehouse. He later joked it was “the gloomiest Tuesday” of his life. But the show keeps his ghost alive—flashbacks and echoes of his choices haunt every major decision in Season 3.
