For my everyday life? Yes, absolutely. If you want an apple that stays crisp, juicy, and delicious for weeks instead of days, the fridge is your best friend.
But there’s a tiny exception. If you plan to eat an apple today or tomorrow, the counter is fine. A room-temperature apple actually tastes a little more aromatic.
Here’s my personal rule: I keep a few apples on the counter for snacking that day, and the rest go into the crisper drawer in the fridge. It’s the best of both worlds.
The "Other Fruit" Warning
Here’s where it gets funny. Because apples release that ethylene gas, they are bullying other fruits in your fridge. A lonely apple next to a bunch of bananas will turn the bananas brown fast.
If you store apples with other produce, the apples win. Your lettuce will wilt. Your broccoli will get sad. Your avocados will ripen overnight.
So, please give your apples their own drawer, or at least a sealed plastic bag. It’s not snobby—it’s survival of the crispiest.
