Disney says the closure will make way for a “stunning, expansive” area inspired by Cars and villains. Yes, you read that right—more Lightning McQueen, less Mark Twain. The island, which has been a fixture since 1973, apparently doesn’t pull in the crowds like it used to. Let’s be honest: who among us can name a single Millennial who’s begged their parents to row across to a cave?

Side note: I get it—business is business. But there’s something poetic about the irony. Disney is literally dismantling a place built on imagination and make-believe because it’s not popular enough. Isn’t that the opposite of what Disney stands for? You’re telling me we can’t let a few kids still pretend to be pirates in a cave just because it’s not ‘Instagrammable’?

What we’re losing (and it’s more than a raft)

Tom Sawyer Island wasn’t a ride; it was a playground for the mind. There were no screens, no queues, no holograms—just you, a rickety suspension bridge, and the faint hope your phone battery would survive the trip. The island thrived on slow, physical discovery: climbing a rock wall, exploring a dark tunnel, or just sitting on a fake porch swing watching the river roll by.

That kind of analog fun feels almost revolutionary today. But apparently, it’s not revolutionary enough for a park that’s banking on IP-driven thrills. (Side eye to the new Tiana’s Bayou Adventure replacing Splash Mountain—I’ll never forgive them for that one.)
