Now, you might be thinking, “Cute story, but why should I care about some guy’s rock pile?” Because this castle is a public monument to pure, unfiltered passion. It’s a reminder that you don’t need a royal title to live like a king.
After Paulson passed away, the castle fell into disrepair for a while. It could have been another sad, forgotten oddity on the side of the road. But then, the community stepped up.

In the 1990s, a nonprofit called the Tucson Historic Preservation Foundation basically adopted it. They restored the tower, fixed the crumbling walls, and made sure Paulson’s weird dream didn’t vanish.
Today, it’s a designated historic landmark. You can’t live in it (sorry, no royal suite rentals), but you can drive by, gawk, and take all the Instagram photos your heart desires. It’s a free show, which is my absolute favorite kind of show.
What’s It Actually Like to Visit?
Honestly, it’s breathtaking in the most unexpected way. You’re driving past strip malls and taco shops, and then BAM—a stone tower with a metal door that looks like it belongs in a Monty Python movie.
The best part? It’s completely unpretentious. There’s no velvet rope, no gift shop selling plastic swords. It’s just a weird, wonderful house sitting there, minding its own business. It’s like the desert decided to grow a castle instead of a saguaro.
Standing in front of it, you can’t help but smile. You think, “Some guy, a hundred years ago, hauled rocks up a hill because he wanted a tower.” And he got it. That’s the most Tucson thing I’ve ever heard.
