A half-pound usually yields two to three medium clusters, or four to six individual legs. It’s the Goldilocks portion—enough to feel satisfied, not so much that you need a nap. Snow crab is the classic choice: sweet, tender, and forgiving for beginners.
King crab is the luxury upgrade, with thicker shells and meat that pulls out in one glorious chunk. But for half a pound? Snow crab wins for value and fun. You get more pieces to crack, more little victories.
Tool Talk: Don’t Be That Person
Use crackers and picks, not your teeth. Your dentist will thank you, and you’ll avoid the dreaded shell-shard-in-gum situation. A pro tip: twist the leg at the joint first—it weakens the shell without smashing the meat.
If you don’t have tools, a kitchen shears works beautifully. Snip down the side of the shell, and the meat slides right out. It’s less theatrical but twice as efficient.
